Horizon Call of the Mountain on PS5 is a virtual reality adventure set in the same world as Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. It was built from the ground up for the PS VR2 headset, which is required to play, and it is one of the clearest demonstrations of what the headset can do.
About the game
You play Ryas, a former Shadow Carja warrior offered a chance at freedom if he investigates a new threat to the machines and people of the Sundom. Most of the game involves climbing: you reach out with the Sense controllers, grab holds and haul yourself up cliffs, towers and ruins, and the sense of height is genuine. Combat uses a bow drawn with your hands, and the machines from the series, from Watchers to Thunderjaws, are enormous when they stand in front of you. Between climbs you craft arrows, solve environmental puzzles and explore villages. Comfort settings cover movement, turning and vignettes so players new to VR can adjust the experience. A separate River Ride mode lets you sit back and take in the scenery without any challenge.
